Comments on Mental Health of Child Hostages

CNN

Dr. Rebecca Berry, a clinical child and adolescent psychologist, speaks on CNN about the mental health impact of child hostage situations in the Middle East. Children who have been exposed to this high level of trauma may enter survival mode and be in a state of shock even after returning to a safe environment.

Children recovering from trauma may experience disruptions in sleep, large displays of intensive emotions, and irritability. In these cases, they can be supported by reducing their sensory stimulation. This includes less exposure to loud noises, crowds, and unfamiliar environments. Surrounding children who are experiencing trauma with comforts such as pets, familiar toys, and loving family and community members can all help support them during these difficult times.
